Nutrigenomics

Nutrients and food components can affect and regulate gene activity with both positive and negative effects.

Nutrigenomics is the study of how dietary factors influence gene expression and subsequently our health.

Diversity in our individual genetic make-up means that we all respond differently various lifestyle interventions such as diet, physical activity, environmental exposures etc. This is because we all have variations in our genes known as Single Nucleic Polymorphisms, or SNPs for short. They can come from one parent (heterozygous) or from both parents (homozygous). Some SNPs have a positive effect on our health, while others have a negative effect and can increase our risk of chronic disease.

Nutrients from the foods we eat can interact with genes to help 'switch on' the positive effects and 'turn off' those that can have a negative impact on our health.

Increased knowledge regarding human genetic variation recognises the diversity of individual nutritional needs that has led to precise personalised nutrition that can be powerfully effective at preventing future chronic illness while maximising your current health and fitness.
